There are heaps of fabulous happenings at this year’s 10th anniversary Arts Festival but here are some with French Connections - tenuous or otherwise …
- Salut printemps is a concert by Voices New Zealand ‘welcoming spring, celebrating the beauty of trembling flowers, the fresh green growth, enchanting evenings, and the season of youth, love and light – all in a mesmerizing programme using French, the official language of love.
The music skips from the better known pieces of Debussy and Poulenc to romantic chansons and a quirky four-song cycle about a dromedary, a crayfish, a carp and a cat.’

‘A culinary investigation into the culture of cheese that delights the senses and feeds the soul’. This ‘unique immersive style of dance, live music and theatre’ comes from last festival’s ‘The Wine Project’ Java Dance Theatre group and the research for this latest show involved several months learning to make cheese in Normandy.

Children’s production by the same Java Dance Theatre group with amazing animals, squirting milk jets and flying hay bales, dancing milkmaids and yodeling goatherds in a farmyard frolic.

Karyn Hay (The March of the Foxgloves) & Lindsey Dawson (Scarlet & Magenta) will be speaking about their respective novels largely set in Tauranga. Hear about ‘their research discoveries, family connections, the ever-present risk of ‘trouble’. The strictures surrounding women in Victorian society, entertainments of the time, French cooks and Maori maids, and the scandals !’.
