The word « réplique », in general means a retort or rejoinder in response to something that has been said or written. It is found in the expressions
« Et pas de réplique ! » – don’t answer (me) back !
« Argument sans réplique » – unanswerable argument
« Preuve qui ne souffre aucune réplique » – incontrovertible proof
By extension, in the world of theatre and film it has the meaning of cue
« Manqué sa réplique » – miss your cue
« Donner la réplique à un acteur » to give an actor his cue or play opposite an actor as illustrated in the picture above.
« réplique » can also mean a replica or reproduction, as the word is used to indicate a thing that is the repeat or copy of another.
This leads to the modern usage that has been unfortunately filling our headlines this past month.
« réplique » is also the word used for an after-shock when an earthquake “repeats itself”.
